A carjacked taxi was involved in a fatal crash on late Tuesday in Chicago's Near North Side.

CHICAGO (WLS) -- A woman was killed in a crash after a carjacking Tuesday night on the Near North Side, Chicago police said.

Surveillance video showed a man open the door of a taxi and pull the driver out and beat him. The carjacking took place in the 200-block of West Walton Street at about 10:45 p.m., police said.

The suspect got away, but was eventually caught after crashing into two vehicles in the 800-block of North Larrabee Street. The driver of one of the other vehicles, 69-year-old Perla Carandang, was pronounced dead at Northwestern Memorial Hospital at 12:56 a.m., according to police and the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office. She lived in the Lincoln Park neighborhood on the North Side.

Police said the victim identified the suspect, who is in custody and is hospitalized in serious condition. The cab driver was hospitalized in good condition.

Police are investigating.
