Pregnant woman grazed by bullet in Canaryville

CHICAGO -- A pregnant woman was wounded by gunfire while walking into a home on Chicago's South Side late Wednesday night.

The 22-year-old woman was listed in good condition at Stroger Hospital Thursday morning, but friends and loved ones were concerned about reports that the shooter was yelling "gang slogans" when they fired in her direction.

She was entering a home near West 48th Place and South Halsted Street around 11:30 p.m. in the city's Canaryville neighborhood when a gray or silver vehicle pulled up and stopped in front of the house. Police said that's when someone shouted gang slogans, got out of the car and fired two shots in her direction.

The woman suffered a graze wound to the chest and a bullet hole was apparently found in the door to the home. The vehicle sped away from the scene after the shooting.

A family friend, who did not want to show his face, told ABC7 Eyewitness News the victim's pregnancy made the situation even scarier.

"She was pregnant with my good friend's baby. I think she's five-and-a-half months," the friend said. "It's not usually this bad. It's kind of scary though."

Area Central detectives are handling the investigation. No one is in custody.
