3 companies cited for failing to protect workers from lead exposure at Old Post Office

CHICAGO (WLS) -- Federal inspectors claim three local companies failed to protect employees from exposure to lead and cadmium while they renovated the Old Chicago Main Post Office.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration inspected the work site managed by American Demolition Corporation, Valor Technologies Inc. and Tecnica Environmental Services, Inc. in August after health officials reported a worker had an elevated blood lead level, officials said.

Authorities said the worker had completed sandblasting work in the building.

OSHA found that the companies failed to comply with protection, handling and training requirements, officials said.

According to officials, the companies face 31 citations, may receive over $220,000 in penalties and have 15 business days to comply with OSHA standards.
