CHICAGO - Illinois Congressman Luis Gutierrez will not run for reelection, according to sources familiar with his decision.
Rep. Gutierrez has represented Illinois's 4th Congressional District since 1993.
ABC7 Political Reporter Craig Wall reported Monday night that 35th Ward Alderman Carlos Ramirez-Rosa is expected to circulate petitions for his seat. Cook County Commissioner and former mayoral candidate Jesus "Chuy" Garcia may circulate petitions as well.
Gutierrez's district represents portions of the West Side of Chicago and some western suburbs. He has long been an outspoken proponent of immigration reform, and has been an energetic critic of the Trump administration.
"It raises a lot of questions. He had a seat for life. He's only in his early 60s. He could have been a congressman for another 10, 15 years, and it makes you wonder what else is out there. What is he going to do instead?" said ABC7 political analyst Laura Washington.
Gutierrez is expected to formally announce his decision Tuesday. He nor his spokespeople commented on Monday night's reports.
