Fire displaces families in Chicago Ridge

CHICAGO RIDGE, IL The fire broke out inside a second floor unit of a three-story, six-unit condominium overnight at 5707 W. 106th. Residents who smelled smoke helped others get out of the building, including at least one family with small children.

"[It was the] first fire I've ever been in. I have two little ones in the house. My neighbor pounded on my door in the middle of the night and said the apartment's on fire," said Amanda Dimple.

"I ran out from the back as fast as I could. There was heavy smoke coming out, so I was really scared," said Mike Barakat. "Everything came out for the best."

At least the top two floors of the building are now uninhabitable.

Fire officials don't know what caused the fire but say there's no evidence of any foul play.

One person was treated for minor smoke inhalation at the scene but did not require hospitalization.
