Joseph Pannell fled to Canada in 1974 and assumed a new identity. He was charged with shooting officer Terrence Knox in 1969. He was arrested in Canada in 2004, but he had been fighting extradition until last month.
A judge ruled Friday Pannell would remain in Cook County custody until his next court appearance in two weeks, when his lawyer will have the opportunity to argue for bail.
Pannell leaves a wife and four grown children behind in Toronto.
