The Illinois High School Association is a step closer to randomly testing high school athletes for performance-enhancing drugs. The tests will be conducted on student-athletes during state competitions.

On Monday, the IHSA board approved a recommendation to finalize the scope of the drug testing plan, which would be implemented in the 2008-2009 school term. The board expects to act on the drug testing plan in March.

In January, the proposal to implement a random testing program for performance-enhancing substances was brought before the board. Officials are working out the details on who will conduct the tests and the penalties that would ensue should students test positive.

According to a press release, the IHSA plans to conduct regional workshops for schools in the spring once the rules are outlined.
