Officer appears in court on battery charges

CHICAGO Investigators say the 25-year-old Chicago police officer -- who was off duty -- was intoxicated and involved in a fight at a Forest Park bar (located at 7500 West Madison) on March 1. They say he was intentionally breaking furniture.

Schmidt allegedly attacked two Forest Park police officers when they tried to arrest him and spit on a paramedic who arrived at the scene. Police say they had to use a Taser gun to subdue him.

Schmidt did not stop to talk to reporters as he left the courthouse Tuesday.

The newly formed Independent Police Review Authority is doing an investigation. Schmidt has been stripped of his police powers pending the investigation.

Schmidt is due back in court on March 18. His attorney asked for a continuance.
