Doctor accused of sexual assault, child porn

WILMETTE Doctor Robert Hughes of Wilmette is a family physician with a practice in Buffalo Grove.

Wilmette police say Doctor Hughes provided illegal and prescription drugs to an underage female in exchange for sex acts. He's also accused of manufacturing child pornography.

His bond was set at half a million dollars.

He was arrested after the parents of the underage girl discovered a text message to their daughter from Hughes.

Hughes' apartment is right across the street from the Wilmette Police Department. On Monday night, police went across the street and took him into custody. They also searched that apartment.

The medical office in buffalo grove, where dr. Robert Hughes is based, was open Wednesday night. But those who work with him had nothing to say publicly.

Police say there is no indication that Hughes met his alleged victim through the medical practice, but it's early in their investigation.

So far they have charged Hughes, 48, with two counts of criminal sexual assault, two counts of manufacturing child pornography, felony possession of cannabis and endangering the health and welfare of a child.

In a statement, police say it took an act of courage for the parents and the victim to come forward to report these incidents to the police. Hughes has lived in his Wilmette condominium building for the last two years or so. His next door neighbor says he never noticed anything suspicious, but Hughes, he says, was far from friendly.

"I'd see him every once in a while. I just took it as being arrogant, you know, and I didn't really, hello, and that's it," said Steve Stein, neighbor.

Investigators believe there could be more victims. Anyone with information should call Wilmette police.
