Driving at age 14?

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. If his bill passes, children could get behind the wheel at the age of 14. Representative Jim Sacia - a Republican from Freeport - said his bill will help young drivers comply with new state rules requiring them to have more driving practice. He said the new rules are overloading the drivers' education system because too many drivers are trying to fit in the instruction in too short of a time.

Reaction to the proposed bill is mixed:

"I drove with my daughter last night and she's 15 and that's early enough," said one Illinois resident.

"I think it's a good idea, it'll help kids get a lot more experience," said another.

The bill is being presented to the Illinois House's Drivers' Education Committee, which is expected to vote on it soon.
