Study prods state action on toxic toys

A study conducted for a consumer group finds 20 different toys on store shelves contain high levels of thalates. Some researchers say the substance can lead to a variety of health problems for children exposed to it.

There's a bill in the state legislature to ban the sale of toys containing the chemical.

"I hope we don't have to wait too much longer while these chemical cocktails are coursing thru our children's bodies before we take action and we need to do it now," said State Rep. Elaine Nekritz, (D) north & northwest suburbs.

Manufacturers say studies do not prove a link between the toys and health problems.
