Arthritis patients may be able to cut back on pain medication with the help of fish oil supplements.

Anti-inflammatory medications such as aspirin are the most common treatment for arthritis, But many patients take the pills constantly to cope with the pain, and that can lead to side effects.

Now a study in the journal Rheumatology finds that taking fish oil pills can reduce the need for medication by 30 percent.

Researchers are not sure exactly why the cod liver oil works but say the fatty acids in the fish oil have anti-inflammatory properties.
