Cab fare surcharge goes into effect April 28

Hailing a cab in Chicago is getting more expensive. The city council approved a dollar-a-ride surcharge to help drivers cover the cost of gas. The surcharge takes effect April 28. It applies equally to all rides -- regardless how far you are going.

But the fee does depend on gas prices. The surcharge is in effect whenever gas tops $3.20 a gallon for a week straight.
