University of Chicago scientists say they have identified a new gene that is linked with asthma.

They believe it could be used both to diagnose the condition and maybe even treat it. The study in the New England Journal of Medicine says variations in this gene can either promote or protect against asthma.

Authors of the study are calling it the most significant genetic discovery on asthma in years. They say this has enormous potential to advance the understanding of the genetic underpinnings of the disease.
