Bear sighting in New Jersey neighborhood

PARAMUS, N.J.

WABC in New York is told the bear was first spotted in Saddle River County Park, Dunkerhook Area, off Dunkerhook Road, at around 8:30 a.m. Police responded and started searching the heavily wooded area.

Newscopter-7 captured pictures of the bear walking around some houses in the area.

The park is located directly behind Paramus Catholic High School.

At one point the bear was surrounded, but workers never took a shot before the bear returned to the woods. By 11 a.m. the bear was back in the brush and out of harms way.

The principal said at the recommendation of police, gym and other outside activities will be held inside as a precaution. Otherwise, classes will be held as normal.

"Bears are here. Don't feed them, don't try and get close to them. Just be patient, they'll move through. We took their area, not vice versa," said one law enforcement official.
