Sexual assault reported in Lakeview

CHICAGO Now, Chicago police are searching for her attacker.

The woman had just left a nightclub when the assault occurred. It happened early Thursday morning near the intersection of Irving Park Road and Ashland.

Chicago police say the young woman had just left a local nightclub and was walking home by herself. Around 3:30 a.m., she turned into a parking lot thinking it was a street. According to police reports, a man followed her into the parking lot and sexually assaulted her.

"You know, it's happening around the corner and definitely makes you look behind your back when you're walking and choose when you leave places and who you're leaving with," said Carrie Gofron, Lakeview resident.

As word of the attack spread Thursday, women who live in Lakeview expressed concern, especially considering this is one of Chicago's safer neighborhoods.

"I feel like it's a safe place. Bad things happen everywhere, I think. So I still feel safe living in the neighborhood, but I definitely don't want to walk by myself after dark," sai one female resident.

The 22-year-old victim is recovering at a hospital and helping police draw a sketch of the suspect.
