Prices for same drugs vary at different stores

A new survey has found that drug prices can vary dramatically from store to store, even within the same chain.

Researchers at Consumer Reports called 163 pharmacies nationwide to compare the price of a three-month supply of various drugs and found the savings were more than just a few dollars here and there.

For example, the cost savings for the anti-clotting drug Plavix varied from $382 to $541, a difference of $159. The incontinence drug Detrol ranged from $365 to more than $500.

The study found Costco and AARP.comhad the cheapest pills while Walgreens and Rite Aid were among the most expensive.

Experts recommend calling around to the find the best deal, and do not rule out independent drug stores because some of those pharmacies had very competitive rates.
