Cook County is taking down the toboggan slides that used to be a popular place for winter fun in the southwest suburbs. On Tuesday morning, crews started demolishing the slides at the Swallow Cliff Forest Preserve near Palos Park. Workers tore out the 800-foot chutes. Those slides have gone unused for years and were not in good shape. Despite pleas from local leaders and toboggan fans, Cook County officials said the $4 million price tag for repairing the slides was too high. So they're spending around $100,000 to take them down.
