Illinois halts 'Yo-Yo' rides after collapse

State officials say owners of a carnival ride named the "Yo-Yo" must immediately stop operating the machine following a collapse of a similar ride at a county fair in California. The Illinois Department of Labor says the ride is manufactured by the Kansas-based company Chance Rides Manufacturing.

Metal arms on the Yo-Yo ride extend from a rotating hub. Chairs are attached to the end of each arm by chains, and swing outward as the hub rotates and picks up speed.

In the California accident last week, the machine's hub disrupted its normal rotation. The chairs collided, and the chains and passengers became tangled. Twenty-three people were hurt.

A Chance official has said the company stands by the safety of its ride.
