Pedestrian killed by Metra train in suburbs

A pedestrian was struck and killed by a Metra train in west suburban Western Springs Tuesday morning.

It happened around 7:45 a.m. An empty outbound Metra train going about 70 mph hit a 21-year-old woman near the station at 1914 Burlington Ave. The train was running on the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Line, which connects Chicago and Aurora.

The woman was reportedly trying to cross the tracks at the time.

The woman's identity has not been released, pending family notification.
