Three shot to death in Roselle identified

ROSELLE, Ill. Police say the boy, Joseph Fontana, was apparently shot several times in his bed. His 60-year-old father, Michael Fontana, was on the floor nearby. The medical examiner's office says it appears he may have died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

They found his 47-year-old wife, Rebecca, in the master bedroom. She was also shot.

Investigators did recover a gun in the home.

"I think it's horrible, terrible to hear something like this happen here in Roselle," said Olga Ortiz, neighbor.

"He was very devoted to his son. They were very concerned about their son's safety. And very much a concern of the child and him being able to walk to and from school, that's why they had bought here-- was the ability to be close to the school and all of that," said Bob Goedke, Homeowners Association president.

"I'm hearing that there was an apparent murder-suicide. And a man evidently shot his wife and 7-year-old," said Kevin Irwin, neighbor. "Surprise, uncertainty. You know, that it could happen so close to home. It's just amazing. I'm not sure what to make of it."

The woman's mother was the first to discover the body. She had gone there after her daughter missed a medical appointment.

The 7-year-old boy was in the first grade at Nerge School.
