The biggest medical problems were seen in people who did not have their piercings done in a medical setting.
Body piercing is a popular trend that does not seem to be going away anytime soon. Medical experts say they're seeing more problems as a result these procedures. A study in the British Medical Journal finds 1 in 10 people now have a piercing other than on the earlobe. But it also finds that 25 percent of those people reported complications including swelling, bleeding and infection. For example a navel piercing can take up to 10 months to heal.
