McDonalds returns sliced tomatoes to meals

McDonalds says it is returning sliced tomatoes to meals after a nationwide salmonella outbreak caused the world's largest restaurant chain to remove tomatoes from its menu.

A spokesperson for McDonalds says the Oak Brook-based company will reintroduce tomatoes in the next seven to 10 days.

McDonald's joined other restaurants and grocery stores that voluntarily stopped selling tomatoes.

Federal authorities have yet to pinpoint the source of the outbreak but say parts of Florida and Mexico were supplying most of the nation's tomatoes when the outbreak began in April.

At least 228 illnesses have been reported in 23 states.
