Google says smart phone on schedule

June 24, 2008 2:21:41 PM PDT
Google says it's on schedule for the release of the first mobile phones to run its Android operating system. The Android phones will let users check e-mail, surf the Web and watch videos on their mobile handsets.

Google is standing by plans to release the phones through various wireless carriers in the second half of this year.

There are reports that the release date is likely to be in the fourth quarter as some carriers struggle to implement the Android technology.

Google's Android phones are designed to compete with Apple's iPhone.
