Rally against proposed railway acquisition

A group of western suburban community leaders gathered in Barrington Sunday to rally the public against what they say is an unfair railway acquisition proposal. The group is holding a series of forums to raise public concern regarding Canadian National's plan to take over a 36-mile stretch of the Elgin, Joliet and Eastern Railway.

They say Canadian National has not answered to community concerns regarding congestion, safety and infrastructural expenses.

"Our feeling is, if there was ever a case to have turned down, this one is it. Suburban Chicago, a built-up area, knowing the impact here, this is one where there should be a no," said Karen Darch, Barrington Village president.

Canadian National says it is planning more meetings with communities as well as with the Federal Surface Transportation Board.
