Great Lakes opens to public for 4th

A July Fourth tradition is back. For the first time since 2001, Great Lakes Naval Station is open to the public.The celebration continues until 10 p.m. Friday.

Visitors can enjoy music, arts, and carnival rides. The event wraps up with fireworks.

Great Lakes was closed to the public after the 9/11 attacks. The celebrations went on, but were only open to members of the military.

The commanding officer says everyone at Great Lakes is excited to welcome the public back to the base.
