For many officers, the holiday weekend is a somber one because they are mourning one of their own. Flags are flying at half staff on all state-occupied buildings across Illinois in honor of slain officer Richard Francis.

Gov. Blagojevich ordered the flags to remain at half staff until sunset on Monday.

Francis was killed early Wednesday morning following a struggle with a homeless woman near a bus station at Belmont and Western.

Police say Robin Johnson grabbed Francis' gun, shot him in the head and then fired a shot at officers rushing to the scene.

Police returned fire shooting Johnson several times. She remains hospitalized and in police custody.
