Day care may lead to weight gain for infants

July 23, 2008 10:28:40 AM PDT
Infants who are cared for on a regular basis by someone other than Mom or Dad tend to gain more weight during their first year of life. Researchers find these children are more likely to be exposed to unfavorable feeding practices, possibly putting them at risk for childhood weight problems.

Authors of the study also found that roughly 40 percent of infants placed in child care when they were younger than three months were less likely to have been breastfed.

Previous research has shown breastfeeding may lower a child's risk of becoming overweight Learn more about this study in the Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine at archpedi.ama-assn.ord .
