Agents say Ciancio solicited and accepted payments from a tow truck driver in return for that driver towing vehicles from numerous accident scenes.
Ciancio worked in the 16th District on Chicago's Northwest Side. He has been relieved of his police powers and is not on active patrol.
Ciancio appeared before a judge Wednesday morning and was released on bond.
He returns to court next month
