Downed power line causes fire in Chicago

CHICAGO Just as ComEd crews were restoring power to a Northwest Side neighborhood some downed power lines caused a fire at a home in the 5500 block of North New England. The blaze was contained to the garage of the home.

"Crews were done with the work and putting the wires back up and they were in the process of switching the power back on to the neighborhood but apparently there was a problem further up stream and that caused a short to happen and because of that the wires in the alley came down and a fire resulted. It is extremely rare but it does happen," said a ComEd spokesperson.

Neighbors say the fire started just as power was restored. But the power went out again after the incident.

ComEd is continuing to work to restore power to the neighborhood.

No one was injured.
