CHICAGO --Violence in Chicago has been going up this year. Police say the number of homicides in the city rose 18 percent in the first seven months of 2008 compared to the same period a year ago. There were 291 people killed between January and last month. That's up from 246 in 2007 and 266 in 2006.
If the homicide trend continues the rest of the year, Chicago would finish with more than 500 murders for the first time since 2003.
