A new proposal was being considered Friday to reroute freight train traffic around the city of Chicago. Canadian National railway wants to buy the Elgin, Joliet and Eastern Railway. The company is asking the federal government to make a decision on the transportation merits of that deal, while still looking into the environmental impact.

The company wants to reduce train congestion through Chicago, but a number of suburbs along the proposed route are concerned about additional freight trains rumbling through their towns.
