Alderman proposes texting-and-driving ban

CHICAGO Alderman Ed Burke introduced an ordinance on the issue Wednesday. It would also prohibit Internet browsing on cell phones or other handheld devices while driving.

Burke says the ordinance would reduce accidents.

"I'm sure all of us anecdotally can be reminded of people we actually see out in their car there looking at their device, text messaging and even trying to get on the Internet while driving a car," Burke said.

Chicago Mayor Richard Daley said he supports the ordinance.

Violators would face fines of $75 or $200 if they are involved in an accident.
