Father, son die trying to rescue boy

A northwest Indiana family is remembering the lives of two men who died while trying to save a boy from drowning.It happened Sunday afternoon in Chesterton. Authorities say three boys were playing in a rain-swollen drainage ditch when one of them became trapped.

John Thanos and his son Mark tried to save the boy, but they were sucked into a culvert.

The men are being remembered as heroes.

"The kid ended up being OK and everything, but the reason they went down and all -- that's something that you can remember, and you're not afraid to tell people if anyone asks, that's what happened to my dad. That's what happened to my grandfather," said John Thanos, victims' son & grandson.

John Thanos was a retired custodian and Korean War veteran. Mark Thanos was a language arts teacher and basketball coach at Wheeler High School.
