CTA offering electronic service alerts

CHICAGO Starting Tuesday, riders can sign up to receive free, electronic "planned service alerts." They'll give commuters a heads up about scheduled service changes due to construction, emergencies or special events.

"In this new system, they can sign up for an email alert, and we will push out to them information whenever we're engaging in some type of service change. And that's available for them to sign up for," said Ron Huberman, CTA president.

There is also a new rail system evacuation video on the CTA's web site. It shows customers what to do in the event of an emergency and where safety features are located on both trains and subway tunnels.

By the end of the year, the CTA plans to unveil a new web site.
