Calumet City applies for 10th state casino license

CALUMET CITY The Columbian Exposition Casino and Entertainment Complex would be in Calumet City. Plans include hotels, restaurants, stores and an indoor water park.

Calumet City's mayor said revenue would be shared with 27 other municipalities and six school districts and would stay in the state.

"Illinois lost an estimated $340 million in tax revenues to the state of Indiana in 2006," Mayor Michelle Qualkinbush said. "A development near the state border will help recapture that lost revenue and keep it in Illinois. With Indiana on our eastern border, Calumet City is in the best geographical location to do just that."

About 60 other cities and Hawthorne racetrack have submitted bids for that casino license. The state gaming board may award the license this year.
