State leaders hope to break the cycle of domestic violence by helping create awareness. Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan and Senators Linda Holmes and Linda Chapa Lavia met at the 'Mutual Ground' shelter in Aurora Thursday as part of Domestic Violence Awareness month.

Statistics show that a woman is abused every ten seconds. Madigan points out that its important to break the cycle of violence by making sure when children start dating they do not repeat the violence they've seen in their homes.

"All to often it is those family relationships that children believe are normal that they then start to engage in when they start dating as well," said Lisa Madigan, Illinois Attorney General.

Madigan also presented the shelter with a $42,000 grant from the Illinois Violent Crime Victims Assistance Fund -- which is administered by her office.
