No more surcharge for Chicago cabs

A surcharge added to Chicago cab fares expired early Friday morning. In April, the City Council approved a $1 surcharge to help drivers deal with high gas prices. As the price of gas has fallen, so has the surcharge.

On October 31, the surcharge dropped from $1 to 50 cents. Then, shortly after midnight, the surcharge was eliminated.

Cab drivers are asking for a permanent 16 percent fare increase. They say they'll strike if one is not approved.
