Illinois Lt. Gov. Pat Quinn paid tribute to some hometown heroes over the weekend.Eighteen different organizations or individuals were singled out for honors Sunday. Hometown Hero award recipients include E. H. Sutherland elementary school, for raising more than $1,000 for an organization that flies local veterans to the World War II memorial in Washington, DC for free, and the 'See Your Soldier,' which allows Illinois military families to talk with their loved ones through free and private video conferencing.

Speakers at the event included representatives from Ladies Aid, a Matteson organization that has sent more than 10,000 items to troops overseas since its founding in June 2007.

"We've had wonderful support, and we're going to keep doing it. We're not stopping until they all come home," said Donna Ringkvinst of Ladies Aid.

Quinn is encouraging everyone to support the troops over the holiday season.
