Obesity in childhood could damage a child's thyroid. That can create a vicious cycle with the metabolism resulting in weight gain.

It's believed obesity may cause inflammation that damages the thyroid. The thyroid secretes hormones to regulate metabolism and other important functions.

The study in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism suggests the existence of a low-grade inflammation state, which has been known to characterize obesity.

More research is needed to show whether losing weight would normalize the thyroid and return the children to health.
