Ill. AG Madigan opposes Ryan release

Ryan has served just over one year of a six-and-a-half year prison sentence for racketeering and corruption.

Illinois Senator Dick Durbin has sent a letter to President Bush asking him to release Ryan from prison. Durbin calls the request an act of compassion.

However, Madigan said she disagrees.

"His case was prosecuted, and he was sentenced to a term of six and a half years. And he should serve his term. As a consequence of committing a crime, being convicted and sentenced, you as well as your family are going to suffer hardship and are going to suffer pain," Madigan said.

President-elect Barack Obama said he thinks it would be inappropriate for him to comment on the issue.
