Michigan state police say seven vehicles were involved.
The Berrien County sheriff's department says a car driven by 31-year-old Raymond Candage slammed into the back of a semi-truck that was stopped in the left lane.
Candage died from his injuries. The crash shut down a portion of Interstate 94 for several hours.
