Sailors treated to holiday celebration

One hundred and twelve sailors posed for a photo outside, commemorating the annual celebration, before heading in for the feast.

The sailors are nearly finished with basic training. Although they're spending the holiday far away from their families, they appreciate the opportunity to relax.

"I miss my family terribly, but honestly, at the end of the day, I'm doing something for my country, and my family loves me and supports me for it," said Audrey Ponce, U.S. Navy.

"It's just so nice to see how much the sailors enjoy, a day when they're taken care of and just spoiled," said Lisa Hancock, Ravenswood Pub.

The Ravenswood Pub tradition of welcoming sailors to a holiday dinner began after the 9/11 attack. Much of the Andersonville community takes part in the preparation and celebration.

After the feast, the sailors were treated to movies and were given cell phones and phone cards to call their families.
