Volunteers help others in need on holiday

At the Haymarket Center, family members, children and staff shared a Christmas feast. They served nearly 700 meals.

The substance abuse treatment facility serves thousands of clients in residential and out-patient programs.

The Salvation Army was serving up treats to families in need on Chicago's West Side on Christmas Day. The not-for-profit organization is the largest provider of direct social services to people in the Chicago area.

Volunteers were busy passing out plates of holiday meals.

The current economic downturn is having a direct impact on the Salvation Army which receives about 70 percent of its annual donations during the holiday season.
