Study: weight-loss surgery could be used for obese teens

New research shows that weight-loss surgery could be used as a treatment option for obese, diabetic teens.

All but one of 11 extremely obese teens studied saw their Type 2 diabetes disappear within a year after weight-loss surgery. The 11th patient still had diabetes, but needed much less insulin.

Researchers at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center acknowledge the sample size was small and that more research is needed.

About a third of U.S. youngsters are either overweight or obese.

The results are in the January issue of Pediatrics.
