City workers might use electric cars

January 13, 2009 (CHICAGO) On Tuesday, Mayor Richard Daley asked the city council to amend the municipal code so crews could operate the vehicles on streets with a speed limit of 30 miles per hour or less.

The compact low-speed cars are powered by electric motors and re-chargeable batteries. The mayor says the vehicles are cost efficient and could be useful for traffic and crowd control at special events.

A council committee will consider the proposal.
