Smoking can damage unborn baby's thyroid function, study says

January 14, 2009 Researchers writing in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism measured thyroid levels in the umbilical cords of babies born to smoking mothers.

Scientists say good thyroid function is key to maintaining a pregnancy and some pregnant women suffer from thyroid imbalances. This can affect metabolism and the risk of miscarriage, premature birth, low birth weight and impaired brain development.
