Commuters could soon be using smart cards to pay fares on all of the area's trains and buses. The CTA, Metra and Pace are looking into streamlining fare-paying By allowing riders to use one card on all 3 transit systems.

The smart transit card could be purchased like a gift card in specific dollar amounts or loaded with cash when necessary. The cards, which contain computer chips, could also be programmed to show if a rider qualifies for a reduced fare.

New York is already experimenting with a pilot program on buses and subways. Chicago is still only in the talking stage.
