Father arrested after throwing girl out in cold

January 16, 2009 (PERU, Ind.) Authorities in Miami County say the girl was wearing a thin sweatshirt and sweat pants. Police say the temperature when sheriff's deputies responded Friday was minus 13 degrees, with a wind chill of minus 33.

Sheriff's deputies found the girl huddled inside an unheated garage. The girl, whose name wasn't released, told police she had been outside for about 20 minutes before seeking shelter in the garage.

Police say 41-year-old Christopher Iliff told deputies he knew his daughter wasn't dressed for the cold when he threw her out. He was arrested on preliminary charges of neglect and battery and was being held on $5,000 bond Friday in the Miami County Jail in Peru, about 70 miles north of Indianapolis.
