Video game use could lead to social problems

January 23, 2009 But a new study finds extensive video use is linked to a number of troubling social problems for young adults.

The research involved both male and female students at Brigham Young University. For both sexes, those who frequently played video games had more trouble in their relationships with friends and family drank more alcohol and abused more drugs. For women in particular, video game use was linked to lower self image.

But, at this point it isn't clear whether video games cause these problems or whether unhappy students are drawn to play games more often.
